Less can be more when it comes to website content

Less can be more when it comes to website content

Let’s face it, today most people don’t seem to have the time, the patience, or possibly even the ability to give their attention freely to any business owner or advertiser who seeks it, especially online. It may help to think of your website visitors as attention deficit disorder sufferers as you develop the content for your website.

One pitfall business owners have when developing content for their website is providing too much information, especially if it is technical. You have to be careful not to overload your customers with information to the point they simply leave your site. Once these potential customers land on your site, you have only 5 to 10 seconds to hold their attention. This is not done with small print or complex figures or charts and graphs from the latest government study. When visitors see large blocks of text, they very often hit the back button and return to their search results for your competitors.

What to do instead? You need visuals, headlines or taglines that get to the point and do not confuse the visitor: You need easily readable text, broken up into short paragraphs that do not span page after page, or make the visitor continuously scroll down to keep reading. It’s even a good idea to have headers in larger, bold text for each paragraph. Have your most important services, products, and selling points highlighted early in the text, and make that “call to action” happen before the visitor gets tired of reading. Today’s online consumers do not give you much time to impress them.
